Never give up on your creative side: An Experience Of Playing In Two Bands

Never give up on your creative side. Sometimes the only thing that can be accomplished out of drawing a picture one day, can be frustration. Though, from what I've learnt from singing in my first band Spray the Wall, and being immersed into the Brisbane music scene, is that there are entire community of musicians driven solely by the need to have freedom of expression.

No one has to be defined as good, by any definition or standard, at what their attempting to be creative at. For months before our first gig, which was the annual tutu festival on Stradbroke Island, the only thing that maintained my confidence, was by telling myself if something did not feel right, I would not have to do it. People say you never know until you try, so I allowed my self the chance to push myself beyond my normal limits.

I allowed myself to release self-consciousness for the space of a thirty minute set of our own style of punk music. So we played this first gig on an oval with the water blowing off the ocean just down the road. We played in front of about 100 people who clapped and cheered after each song, which that was enough for me. Afterwards I was left with this kind of inflation that within this one life we live, I did what I truly wanted to do. The rest of the night passed in the rush of a blurring excitement. For once it felt like something clicked into place and it felt like things are happening for the right reasons.

A year and a half later my brother and our friends began another musical venture, a band called Wreckage. After recording our first EP's for Spray the Wall and Wreckage, I can finally hear what I imagined when we began. This derived only out of years from solely focusing on having fun and the freedom of creativity; the will power to do what you want to do, without the restraints and pressure of wondering whether it was good enough.

So, I believe if you just give yourself a chance to have a go at whatever creative outlet you want, you may learn things about yourself you've never known.

You can follow our upcoming events and release dates for our first officially recorded music on our Facebook and Instagram pages under the names Spray the Wall, and Wreck Age.
